Prospect Park running

Prospect Park is a 585 acres public park in the New York City borough of Brooklyn located between Park Slope, Prospect Lefferts Gardens, Ditmas Park, Windsor Terrace and Flatbush Avenue, Grand Army Plaza and the Brooklyn Botanic Garden. It is run and operated by the New York City Department of Parks and Recreation and is part of the Brooklyn-Queens Greenway. The park was designed by Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux after they completed Manhattan's Central Park. Attractions include the Long Meadow, a 90-acre meadow, the Picnic House, which houses offices and a hall that can accommodate parties with up to 175 guests; Litchfield Villa, the pre-existing home of Edwin Clark Litchfield, an early developer of the neighborhood and a former owner of a southern section of the Park; Prospect Park Zoo; a large nature conservancy managed by the Wildlife Conservation Society; The Boathouse, housing a visitors center and the first urban Audubon Center; Brooklyn's only lake, covering 60 acres; the Prospect Park Bandshell that hosts free outdoor concerts in the summertime. The park also has sports facilities including seven baseball fields in the Long Meadow, and the Prospect Park Tennis Center, basketball courts, baseball fields, soccer fields, and the New York Pétanque Club in the Parade Ground.

Cobble Hill Park urban parks

This small park occupies a half of a secluded, oblong trapezoid of a block just steps from the commercial center of Cobble Hill. The utilitarian steel and concrete that featured in the park's original 1965 design are long gone, replaced in 1989 with granite entrance columns, herringbone-patterned brick paths, and cast iron. A modest lawn, off-limits to dogs, encircles a rose garden and lends the revamped layout—which won the Art Commission's 1988 Annual Award for Excellence in Design and the Parks Council's first Philip Winslow Award for Public Projects in 1990—a formal, European feel. Locals—who call it "Verandah Park" after Verandah Place, one of its bordering streets—enjoy their lunches and newspapers at the many benches and picnic tables near its Clinton Street entrance, while kids run around in the tiny playground or splash in the dolphin fountain at the rear. All of that, coupled with summer music concerts and an annual Halloween parade, make it a festive, and attractive, neighborhood haven. — Caroline Kinneberg

Grand Army Plaza sports and recreation

Grand Army Plaza provides the grandest of park entryways in New York City's answer to the Arc de Triomphe in Paris. Conceived as a memorial to the defenders of the Union in the Civil War, the elaborately carved Arch is also a base for a series of inspired bronze sculpture groupings that soar over the Plaza. On the ground, bold statues surround the massive arch, including a noted bust of President John F. Kennedy, and the mythical tableau atop the famous Bailey Fountain.
